Inspiration of Divine Femininity

We met Malawian illustrator, Lambi Chibambo, at our Creatives Mashup Party in Cape Town.

Inspired by her beautiful soul, and unique, captivating, feminist artwork, we commissioned her to create a piece that exudes divine feminine energy.

To spread the power of this image, we installed it as a 20ft mural in the middle of New York City with the help of seasoned artist, Lexi Bella. The mural was unveiled on March 8th, International Womxn’s Day.

We shared this image with two talented recording artists in Cape Town; one Shona, and one Afrikaans, and asked if they’d team up to create a song together, inspired by the illustration.

This is it. WOLF AT NIGHT.

About Wolf at Night by Slow Jack x Tatenda wekwaTenzi

Wolf at Night is a female-empowering anthem, dripping in divinity that every womxn around the world can relate to.

This first-time collaboration between Jayme Van Tonder, from the smash-hit South African band Slow Jack, and Shona songstress Tatenda wekwaTenzi exhibits a diverse range and electric, yet organic vibration that could only hail from Southern Africa’s Rainbow Nation. Even with the first verse in Shona, Tatenda’s native tongue, and the remainder of the song in English – the second language of both artists, you’ll find yourself instantly connected to a soulful spirit, and commanding vocal prowess that has you singing along in no time.

The two artists, both living in Cape Town, South Africa were brought together to create this track by Various Roots, as a part of their Heritage of Queendom campaign promoting talented female artists from Southern Africa.

This African Pop-Rock hit was composed by the Slow Jack band (of Afrikaans, South African descent), with Tatenda wekwaTenzi (Shona, Zimbabwean descent) on the marimba.

Shona lyrics were written by Tatenda wekwaTenzi, and the English lyrics were written by Hannes Muller (Slow Jack) and Andrew McDermott (Various Roots) as an ode to the power & unstoppable life-force of their female partners – being fierce and assertive like ‘a wolf at night,’ with the unrelenting determination of being ‘a woman on a roll.’

Won’t you forget about it

Don’t want to hear about it

Don’t want to talk about it

Won’t you forget about it

—INTRO—

—VERSE1——

Ndinokuchengeta nyangwe zvichirwadza [I take care of/protect you even when it’s painful/taxing to the soul]

Masimba haaperi ini ndakazara [I am full of power; it is everlasting]

Ungandipikisa hako asi ndinogona [You may deny it but I know my worth/I know I’m the shit]

Ndirichisikwa chinoyera ndichatonga [I am a sacred being; I will rule]

—VERSE1——

—PRE CHORUS—-

Kubvira pakutanga nekusingaperi [From the beginning to infinity]

Mwedzi kana zuva ko idzo nyeredzi [The moon, the sun and even the stars]

Dzinocherechedza kusimba kwemunhukadzi [Recognise/are aware of the power/strength of the womxn being] Asi…

—PRE CHORUS—-

—CHORUS—

You make me feel like a dog in the morning

But I am a wolf at night

You better, heed my warning

You better, hold on tight

Never will I take it slow

I’ll give it some more

I won’t give up

Cause I’m a woman on a roll

—CHORUS—

—-VERSE2—-

I played your part, on my own (Zvichirwadza) [Even when though painful]

I got a job and built a home (Blue eyed, broken bones)

Scars and all, badges gained (Asi ndinogona) [But I know my worth]

Lips won’t smile, don’t feel the same (Asi ndichatonga) [But I will rule)]

—-VERSE2—- —

PRE2—-

I won’t give it up

It’s my curtain call

Now clear the stage

Or watch the weak ones fall
